‘Tales From Katrina’ Session in the Spotlight at Gaming Law Conference

NEWS

NEW ORLEANS (Oct. 20, 2006) – International Masters of Gaming Law has announced several enticing additions to its Winter Conference Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at the Wyndham New Orleans at Canal Place, New Orleans:

  • The final session of the two-day conference, “Tales From Katrina,” has gained a special keynote speaker and an appropriate new venue. At noon Friday, Dec. 1, conference attendees will walk from the hotel to the adjacent Aquarium of the Americas where they will view the critically acclaimed IMAX movie “Hurricane on the Bayou,” and will be treated to a keynote address from L. Ronald Forman, President and CEO of the Audubon Nature Institute. Local IMGL member J. Kelly Duncan will host the “Tales from Katrina” discussion.

  • IMGL’s Winter Conference gala dinner event will be staged at the magnificent Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, adjacent to our headquarters hotel, on Thursday, Nov. 30. A cocktail reception begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7. The cocktail reception will be held in the Aquarium’s Caribbean Exhibit, followed by dinner in the Gulf of Mexico Exhibit.

  • A new session has been added to Day 2 of the Conference, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1: “Advertising Panel: Understanding TV’s Standards and Practices.” Sandford Millar, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel, Ultimate Blackjack Tour, will moderate a panel that includes Ian Imrich, CEO/President, Law Offices of Ian J. Imrich; Michael Lipton, Elkind and Lipton, Toronto; and Nick Nocton, Jeffrey Green Russell, London. The session is described this way: The primary driver in global interactive gambling is television. Broadcast standards and practices shape the direction and content of television programming and marketing. Television programming is subject to broadcast standards and practices of each network, but ultimately is the result of the networks’ interpretation of national regulatory efforts. This session will address the relationship between global interactive gambling and television standards and practices.

The Winter Conference gets under way at 5 p.m. Nov. 29 with a Welcome Reception at the Wyndham Riverbend Terrace, featuring spectacular views of the Mississippi River and the French Quarter. The Conference begins in earnest at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 30 with a keynote address by Jerry St Pe’, Chairman of the Mississippi Gaming Commission.

International Masters of Gaming Law Names W. Owen Nitz, Jeffrey M. Cooper as Gaming Executives of the Year

NEWS

BILOXI, Miss. (Sept. 11, 2006) – International Masters of Gaming Law is pleased to announce the co-recipients of the inaugural Gaming Executives of the Year award: W. Owen Nitz is an attorney and managing partner of Nitz, Walton & Heaton in Las Vegas. Jeffrey M. Cooper is a CPA with Bradshaw Smith & Co. in Las Vegas. Together they are the co-trustees of the former Imperial Palace, now IP Biloxi.

One year after the destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina, Nitz and Cooper stand out among the thousands of gaming industry executives and employees, lawyers, lawmakers and regulators who have dedicated themselves to helping the Gulf Coast region emerge from the devastation.

The honorees are featured in a special edition of Casino Lawyer magazine – produced by the IMGL – distributed this week to IMGL members and subscribers of Casino Enterprise Management magazine. They will be honored during IMGL’s Winter Conference, Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at the Wyndham New Orleans at Canal Place.

In his Message from the President in Casino Lawyer, Michael Lipton wrote of Nitz and Cooper’s “remarkable dedication to restoring their community. They showed up to ride out the storm and haven’t left. In the months after the storm, IP Biloxi housed the emergency’s first responders, such as FEMA personnel and an army of relief workers and insurance adjusters. In just four months, they completely overhauled their property and reopened it in December, the first Biloxi property to do so. That meant roughly 1,500 jobs back online – bolstering both the economy and a community’s battered morale.”

Among the numerous contributions that IP Biloxi has made to the community:

  • More than $500,000 to help bring Nativity BVM elementary school back to life

  • More than 1,300 wheelchairs distributed throughout the region

  • Harrison County Habitat for Humanity, $200,000

  • The Living Cities, $50,000

  • Salt and Light Ministries Foundation, $30,000

  • Mississippi Coast Coliseum, $15,000

  • Gulf Coast Symphony, $15,000

  • OHR-O’KEFFE Museum, $10,000

IMGL Biloxi member Britt Singletary, writing in Casino Lawyer, had this to say: “Owen Nitz and Jeff Cooper had the optimism and determination to not merely rebuild the IP, but to devote even greater financial resources to make it a premier property able to compete with any gaming facility in the State of Mississippi.  Their vision has been proven by the tremendous acceptance and appreciation by the public.

“The decisions made by Owen and Jeff to invest their time, expertise and the Engelstad Family Trust resources back into Biloxi had a great deal to do with showing other developers that the Mississippi Gulf Coast remains a great place for new development.”

The IMGL is committed to the rebuilding effort along the Gulf Coast. Several hundred influential gaming lawyers and regulators are expected to attend the Winter Conference in New Orleans. Much of that conference will be dedicated to gaming and its economic impact in the post-Katrina South. Nitz will be a keynote speaker at the conference, as will Jerry St Pe’, Chairman of the Mississippi Gaming Commission.
